Activated carbon has become an essential material across nearly all industries, particularly in Fume Extraction Systems and Industrial Central Filtration Units. In manufacturing environments, filtering toxic gases and raw material odors is not just an environmental requirement — it’s a critical step in ensuring clean air and worker safety.

What Is an Activated Carbon Filter?

Commercially produced activated carbon is derived from carbon-based materials such as wood, peat, lignite, coal, bone, coconut shell, rice husk, nut shell, and oil by-products. These materials undergo physical modification and thermal decomposition in a controlled atmosphere and temperature to become activated carbon with a highly porous structure optimized for adsorption performance.

Does the Activated Carbon Filter Remove Odors and Gases?

With a surface area enhanced up to 100 times (approximately 1200 m²/g), activated carbon offers exceptional adsorption capacity. It effectively absorbs gases, odors, tastes, and colors caused by airborne pollutants — including numerous toxic compounds.

It is particularly efficient in capturing fumes from welding processes and chemical vapor emissions.

When welding stainless steel, aluminum, or other metals, intense metallic odors are released. These cannot be captured by polyester, cellulose, or fiberglass filter media. Only carbon granule filters can effectively trap and filter such metallic fumes and odors at desired efficiency levels.

It also ensures high efficiency in filtering welding fumes from high-alloy metals containing more than 30% nickel and chromium. Harmful vapors generated during chemical applications are also captured within the efficiency rates outlined in the PDF chart.

Service Life of the Activated Granular Carbon Filter

The lifespan of an activated granular filter varies depending on its application area. In industrial fume extraction systems, its service life is considerably long. Although the lifespan of carbon media can be calculated, it differs per system and application. The recommended replacement period is once per year.
